Wind Danger Today!

Exceptionally strong winds will be plaguing a great deal of the state today.  These winds, combined with low humidity levels, will create an extreme wildfire potential, especially across western and eastern Oklahoma.  In addition, temperatures will be unusually warm and could approach record highs.  Please take extreme caution if you are traveling or heading outside today.  While the temperature may be pleasant, the winds will not be.

A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect across almost every single county in the state of Oklahoma, until 6 PM CST this evening.  In the warned areas, humidity levels will be as low as 10 percent, afternoon temperatures will be in the upper-60s and 70s, and sustained winds will be between 25 and 35 mph from the south, with gusts up to 45 mph.  Such conditions will cause fires to develop rapidly and spread out of control.  Take action immediately by disposing of cigarettes properly and avoiding any activities that could start a fire.

In addition to the Red Flag Warning, a WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 6 PM CST this evening.  This advisory includes all of central, southwest, and northeast Oklahoma and overlaps the Red Flag Warning in most counties.  Even though some areas of Oklahoma have not been placed under a Red Flag Warning, you still need to take all necessary actions to prevent fires as humidity levels will be low.  In the advised areas, wind speeds will be sustained between 25 and 35 mph from the south to southwest, with gusts generally between 40 and 45 mph.  Such conditions will lead to difficultly driving, especially for high-profile vehicles.  Also be alert for cross-winds.  Downed tree limbs that grew weak from the recent ice storm and brief power outages may also occur.

Northwest Oklahoma, the panhandle, and southeast Oklahoma will also have strong winds, blowing between 20 and 25 mph from the southwest and gusting up to 35 mph.
