Winter Weather Tonight and Saturday, but then Spring!

While conditions are pleasant right now, some more winter weather is on its way for tonight and early  Saturday. Fortunately for Oklahomans, it won't be nearly as bad as the storm last weekend, and temperatures will quickly recover into the glorious 70's early next week.

Right now temperatures are in the low to mid 60's across most of the state, with the exception of the panhandle, which is in the upper 50's, and the southwest, which is in the mid to upper 70's. It is partly cloudy for most of the state, and mostly cloudy in the northeast, but regardless there are extremely high winds for almost all of the state. Right now winds are hovering between 15 and 20, with some strong gusts around 30, and even 35 in some areas. With these Oklahoma winds and warm temperatures, there are always high fire dangers, so be wary of that.

Starting tonight, temperatures will start to drop and bring cold rain for most of the state, and some sleet and snow for the north. Low temperatures will be higher as you go south, so the trend is similar to last weeks storm, but with higher temperatures and less precipitation. In the northern part of the state low temperatures will be right around freezing, in the central part of the state they will be in the mid to upper 30's, and in the south they will be in the low 40's. Based on this, only the northern part of the state, and maybe some areas in the east, will see sleet and maybe some snow, while most of the state will see rain and cold temperatures. The precipitation will only last until Saturday morning for the western half of the state, while it could last into Saturday afternoon or evening for the eastern half.

The precipitation won't be very heavy, so there will be very little ice accumulation, with only the very northwest part of the state seeing ice and snow accumulation of an inch or two, while the rest of the northern part of the state, and a little of the eastern part, will only see small ice accumulations. Driving conditions won't be as bad as last weekend, but they will still be of concern in parts of the state, so travel cautiously. The northwest part of the state also has the highest chances of seeing precipitation, and it will see most of it come tonight, while the central and northeast part of the state will see most of it early Saturday, and the east probably only on Saturday. Right now, precipitation chances are around 60-80% in the central and northern part of the state, and 40-70% in the south and southeast portion of the state. The southwest is the only part of the state with very low chances, and may not see any precipitation this weekend.

High temperatures will be in the upper 30's to mid 40's on Saturday, but after the precipitation passes, conditions are expected to improve for the rest of the weekend. As the skies clear late Saturday, it will create low temperatures in the upper 20's to low 30's for Sunday morning, but with sunny skies it will warm up quickly into the mid to upper 50's for most of the state, with high winds.

Early next week it is supposed to warm up tremendously, with highs well into the 70's for Monday and Tuesday with clear and sunny skies. Unfortunately this will not help the drought conditions in Oklahoma, especially in the southwest, but it will make for a very enjoyable start to the week. Who says Monday's always have to be bad. Late Tuesday, another small front is expected to move through, which will drop temperatures into the mid 50's Wednesday, and bring some small chances of rain, especially in the northeast part of the state, and maybe some snow in the northwest and panhandle. This front will not last long, as after Tuesday night and maybe early Wednesday, it will be gone and temperatures will rise back into the 60's.
Unfortunately, it's that time of year again. Daylight Savings Time is Sunday at 2:00 a.m, so don't forget that you'll be losing an hour of sleep and moving your clocks ahead one hour. Otherwise, be careful on Saturday, and enjoy the warm weather early next week!
