Chance for Storms Wednesday Through Thursday

The warm weather comes to an end Monday as a cold front advances across the state. In areas of western Oklahoma and the panhandle, high temperatures will drop nearly 20 degrees below what they were on Sunday. Expect the low-to-mid-50s for highs in the panhandle and northwestern Oklahoma and the mid-to-upper 50s elsewhere. In extreme southern Oklahoma, we may still see some low-60s. In western and central Oklahoma, skies will start out mostly cloudy and gradually clear throughout the day as the cold front passes through. In the east, expect skies to be cloudy all day, with rain showers developing during the afternoon. Monday night/Tuesday morning temperatures will be rather chilly, with some spotty showers across the state. Most of the state will see lows in the low-to-mid-30s, but further north, the low-to-mid-20s may be a chilly greeting as you step outside to start your day.

For Tuesday, highs across Oklahoma will be right around normal, with the low-to-mid 50s in the north and the mid-to-upper-50s in the south. Skies will be mostly clear. Tuesday night/Wednesday morning temperatures will widely vary across the state. For most of the southern half of the state, the low-to-mid-40s will dominate, but as we go further north, we may see lows as cold as the mid-20s.

On Wednesday, our next weather system moves in from the west and gives us a good chance for showers and thunderstorms, as well as temperatures that will continue to sink. In fact, parts of northeastern Oklahoma may see some wintry weather! Muskogee, Tulsa, Claremore, Bartlesville, and Miami: expect a wintry mix of precipitation in the morning, followed by a few showers in the afternoon. For the remainder of the state, the storms will start out in the panhandle Wednesday afternoon and advance eastward. In most of Oklahoma, the greatest chance for thunderstorms will occur overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. However, expect rain showers to occur during the day Wednesday. As far as those temperatures are concerned, expect widely varying highs from south to north. We will see highs top out around the 50s in extreme southern Oklahoma and get colder as we go north, not breaking 40 degrees. Due to the cloud cover, Wednesday night/Thursday morning temperatures will not be much different from Wednesday high temperatures.

For Thursday, skies begin to clear in western Oklahoma, while central and eastern Oklahoma will see some lingering showers and thunderstorms as the cold front continues to pass through. High temperatures will warm up to the mid-to-upper 50s in central Oklahoma, while they remain slightly cooler elsewhere, especially in the panhandle and the extreme northeast. Lows for Thursday night/Friday morning will dip down into the 20s for most of the state. It may be warmer further south, with the 30s prevailing. But be prepared for a winter reality check!

On Friday, we’ll have mostly clear skies all across Oklahoma. Temperatures will return to normal for the south but will remain cool in the north. Highs may not break the 40s in northern Oklahoma but will hover in the 50s further south.
