Not Exactly a Winter Wonderland

While it seemed to be warming up a bit around Oklahoma, another cold front coming through Friday night will be sure to change that. The National Weather Service out of Oklahoma City has already issued a special weather statement throughout the state, in preparation for what appears to be a very cold and snowy week ahead, which will come in the form of a multiple front system that could bring in 3 rounds of winter weather.

For starters, a cold front will be moving through tonight (Friday) that will bring freezing rain and possibly some wintry mix through the northern and central portions of the state, that could potentially bring some ice hazards for Saturday morning. The temperatures will remain fairly cold, in the upper 20's to low 30's throughout the weekend and into next week. The next batch of cold weather is expected to start Saturday night which will bring wintry precipitation to the southern portion of the state, and snow in the northern portion. This front is expected to bring a majority of its precipitation Sunday and, like the image above, could bring snow and ice accumulation across the state, with the southern and central portions predicted to receive the most accumulation. After that, another quick front will follow, bringing snow and rain possibly as early as Monday morning and continuing on into Tuesday, with the majority of snow and ice accumulation predicted for the central portion of the state. After the front passes through, expect temperatures to drop even further into the mid 20's for the rest of the week. Everyone in Oklahoma, particularly the central and eastern portions of the state should prepare for this upcoming winter event and try and stay safe next week!

Across the Nation

If you are in Oklahoma and are worried about the upcoming winter storms, don't fret because the rest of the midwest, mid-atlantic, and Northeast will be just as worried if not more so. These areas will be seeing several very large cold fronts come through, dumping exceptional amounts of snow and ice, especially in the midwest, with areas in Illinois and Michigan predicted to receive over half a foot before the weekend is even over. Meanwhile, the mid-atlantic states could receive some very serious ice warnings over the weekend and through next week. For those worried, particularly Denver fans, about the weather impacting the Super Bowl this Sunday have no fear, the upcoming storms are not expected to impact the game, and New York will see temperatures in the mid to upper 40's with very little precipitation chances. By the weeks end however, some areas in the midwest could see over a foot of snow, and some very serious winter weather hazards.

This past week saw a very chaotic winter weather event in the southeast with areas like Alabama and Georgia completely shutting down and declaring states of emergencies. A lot of areas in the southeast received a lot of criticism for poorly handled responses to the weather, particularly considering the areas only received 2 to 3 inches of snow. Officials in Georgia particularly received a lot of flak for not shutting down earlier and canceling schools during the storms, which left hundreds of children stranded in schools, and thousands of motorists stranded on roads and highways, with many deciding to walk home. While this may show the northern areas of the country what not to do during a winter storm, hopefully this event helps prepare these typically warmer areas for winter storms like this in the future.
