Not Exactly a Winter Wonderland

While it seemed to be warming up a bit around Oklahoma, another cold front coming through Friday night will be sure to change that. The National Weather Service out of Oklahoma City has already issued a special weather statement throughout the state, in preparation for what appears to be a very cold and snowy week ahead, which will come in the form of a multiple front system that could bring in 3 rounds of winter weather.

Brief Warm-up Before ANOTHER Cold Front

Snow flurries and light snow showers deposited a thin layer of white on the ground across parts of central and northern Oklahoma Tuesday morning.  This brief round of snow brought a slight relief in the precipitation "drought" Oklahoma has been experiencing so far this month, but has since ended, giving way to sunny skies for the afternoon.  For much of the state, no further precipitation is expected until next week.  However, parts of northeastern Oklahoma may see some wintry weather on Friday and Friday night, with parts of southeastern Oklahoma seeing some rain showers.  We will have more details on this below.

Warm, Then Cold Again

Temperature swings across the state will continue on into next week.  Following very cold weather yesterday and today, this weekend will be some 20 to 30 degrees warmer, with highs well above average.  Then, yet another cold front blows through, dropping temperatures back down at least 30 degrees - all in time for the start of your work week!  So let's step through the forecast for the next few days to see how you should prepare for this crazy Oklahoma weather.

Classic Example of "Roller Coaster Temperatures" This Week

Make sure you have your wardrobe ready!  Temperatures will be all over the place this week as one cold front pushes through tonight, bringing cooler temperatures for tomorrow, and then as a second, much stronger, front pushes through Wednesday night into Thursday.  We'll have generally pleasant conditions for Monday and Wednesday but conditions more reminiscent of the winter season on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Elevated Fire Danger This Weekend

Due to dry, warm, and windy conditions, an increased risk for wildfires is a threat across a majority of the state this weekend.  Outdoor burning is not recommended and should be limited or cancelled at all costs.  Under such conditions, any developing wildfires can develop quickly and spread rapidly out of control.  For your safety, please take extreme caution if handling fire outdoors this weekend.

Wind Danger Today!

Exceptionally strong winds will be plaguing a great deal of the state today.  These winds, combined with low humidity levels, will create an extreme wildfire potential, especially across western and eastern Oklahoma.  In addition, temperatures will be unusually warm and could approach record highs.  Please take extreme caution if you are traveling or heading outside today.  While the temperature may be pleasant, the winds will not be.

Weather Pattern Turns Wet

A low pressure system will bring fog and drizzle to the state tonight.  As temperatures drop below freezing, some light icing will be possible.  As the week comes to a close, another low pressure system will move from the northwestern United States to the southern Plains, and we will be dealing with a decent chance for rain Thursday night into Friday.

Brace Yourselves! Frigid Weather Arrives

UPDATED 5:10 PM CST Sunday
A recent cold front has brought incredibly cold, sub-freezing temperatures to the state.  A developing low pressure system even dumped as much as 3 inches of snow on northern Oklahoma.  In addition to the cold temperatures behind the front, brisk northerly winds are leading to negative and single-digit wind chill values for central and northern Oklahoma.  On Monday, the cold weather will continue, with strong winds persistent through the morning.  These conditions are unusually and dangerously cold, so we urge you to protect yourself from the cold weather.
